Scores of residents from Kihindu village in Rwathia Kangema are urgently appealing to the government for assistance in securing alternative land for relocation, following the devastation caused by landslides.
The residents expressed deep concern over their safety, citing the emergence of extensive cracks in the ground that have led to the destruction of their homes and land. Faced with ongoing heavy rainfall, they have been compelled to seek refuge in neighboring villages due to the looming threat of further landslides.
Peter Kamau, a resident, emphasized the gradual sinking of the area, warning of the imminent collapse of the entire village if the rains persist. The presence of significant cracks in the houses has rendered them uninhabitable, heightening fears of imminent structural failure.
“This is not the first time.we are having landslides in the area, about five years ago we were forced to move out of our homes when huge crack developed on the ground” said Kamau.
“We went back to our homes after three years when we were told it’s safe but this time the situation is worse” he remarked. Kamau said the government should get them and alternative land for settlement adding that the area ready to start afresh rather than living in anxiety.
“We are ready to move to a different place and start life afresh because this place is no longer safe for us” he added.
Peris Wanjiru another residents said they have encountered numerous loses as their tea farms have been destroyed. “We are being accommodated by neighbours of good will but we urge the government to consider settle us elsewhere” she added.
