A video showing a group of young women harassing another lady in what appears to be a public bathroom went viral online, drawing widespread outrage and prompting Riara University in Nairobi to issue a formal statement on Friday, October 2.

The university confirmed that some of the individuals identified in the footage were reportedly its students, and moved quickly to distance the institution from the behaviour on display.

Riara University’s Response to the Viral Video

In a press release signed by the Vice Chancellor, the university described the footage as depicting intimidation, bullying and physical assault, conduct it said ran directly against its values and the code of conduct governing all enrolled students.

“Riara University unequivocally condemns violence, intimidation, bullying, harassment or misconduct in any form,” the statement read.

The university acknowledged that the incident took place off-campus but maintained that location did not exempt students from institutional accountability. Leadership confirmed that a formal internal review had been launched under the university’s Student Code of Conduct and said the institution was prepared to cooperate with any investigative authorities looking into the matter.

Kenyans Demand More Than a Statement

The press release drew a mixed response online, with many Kenyans welcoming the acknowledgement but pressing the university for concrete action rather than procedural language.

Wangechi Wangechi said: “The update is good, but action should be taken, and the young girl should be supported.”

@Vee Vee was more pointed: “What’s this obsession with investigation when the evidence is all over? Ni sisi hatuna akili na macho ama?”

@Kui kept it brief but direct: “Now we need to know what measures you will take.”

The comments reflected a broader frustration among those who felt the statement, while necessary, stopped short of spelling out consequences for the students involved. Many called for the victim to receive direct support, not just an institutional review.
