Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has set tongues wagging after sharing that he spent part of his trip to the United States training at a gun range in Texas, complete with self-defence lessons for his wife, Rev. Dorcas Gachagua.
In a post shared on September 30, 2026, Gachagua wrote that the Texas stop gave him a chance to revisit combat skills he first picked up during his earlier career in the security sector, calling it an opportunity too good to pass up.
Why Gachagua trained his wife in self-defence
The politician framed the training session as a matter of personal responsibility, pointing to what he described as rising “goonism” in Kenya as the driving motivation.
He said that given the climate at home, it was only right to ensure Rev. Dorcas was equipped with basic self-defence skills.
Joining the couple at the indoor shooting range were Hon. MejjaDonk Gathiru and Hon. James Gakuya.
Photos from the session show the group in matching camouflage shirts, wearing ear protection and safety glasses, and holding up an orange silhouette target peppered with bullet holes clustered near the centre ring.
Gachagua wrapped up his post on a political note, signing off with his signature rallying call: “The Future is Green.” Here is his post:
Kenyans react to the Texas training session
The post quickly drew reactions from Kenyans online, with opinions split between admiration and sharp scepticism.

“This is awesome, Your Excellency. May you return to your beloved country safe and full of energy. Aamiin.”

“Can you imagine you have a safe haven to hide when you turn Kenya to something else? Wakenya kueni macho.”
While in Texas I have taken time to practice and sharpen my skills in weaponry and basic combat skills that I learnt in my earlier life while serving in the security sector.
In the difficult times we face back home, where goonism is away of life, as a responsible spouse I have taken the advantage of my trip in the United States to have Rev. Dorcas taken through basic skills in self defence.
We were joined by Hon. MejjaDonk Gathiru and Hon. James Gakuya for the practice which makes my team stronger and well prepared for any eventuality in the challenges time we face as we engage Kenyans.
But all in all, The Future is Green.
God Bless Kenya.
