Over 20 schools have so far registered to compete in this year’s Rupa Mall Fitness Centre swimming championships next week in Eldoret.

The swimming gala will act as a build-up for most schools in the region ahead of the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Championships next month and the subsequent East Africa Schools Championships in Burundi.

Event organizer Linet Ochieng said they have been targeting and training school-going students for major swimming competitions for the past year as part of nurturing their talents.

Ochieng said their aim is to see young people create a career from their talents.

“We are committed to developing talent. The region is endowed with talent in sporting activities, especially athletics. However, there is a lot of potentials for the region to excel in other sporting activities such as swimming and other indoor games. We can realise this by nurturing talents from a tender age,” said Ochieng.

She added that they need to tap and grow talents in order to realize their full potential both at a regional and national level.

The sporting activity slated to be an annual event is essential in fighting mental health issues, as sports keep the learners fit amid reports on the rise of mental health disorders in Kenya.
