A former student of the Rift Valley Technical Training Institute ( RVTTI) in Eldoret moved the court as she narrated how her former boyfriend hatched a vicious attack, dousing the left side of her neck with sulphuric acid.

Bevaline Jelimo Sum, who was pursuing a diploma in electrical engineering, told the court that her ex-lover, Tonny Kimwetich Kangogo, doused her with the acid after she terminated their romantic relationship over some issues that she did not disclose in court.

Testifying before Eldoret presiding magistrate Keyne Odhiambo, Sum recalled that the horrific incident that left her fighting for her life at a private hospital occurred on July 28 2025, in the SOS area of Kapsoya estate, Uasin Gishu county.

She brought to the attention of the packed court that, since terminating their relationship, the accused had been issuing threats and intimidation to her.

She noted that the attack on her was so swift that she could not notice the perpetrator, adding that it was only after she was rushed to a private hospital by a good Samaritan that she regained her consciousness.

She informed the court that the accused sent Ksh. 11,000 via her elder sister’s mobile phone number to meet her hospital bill, but she reversed the money on orders from her parents.

The court heard that the complainant’s parents incurred more than Ksh. 1 million towards her treatment from the grievous injuries she sustained from the acid attack.

The court was shocked to learn that after accomplishing his mission, the accused person fled from the scene and rushed to the college to sit his final paper in electrical engineering.

He had denied the charge of causing grievous harm to his ex-lover during plea-taking and was subsequently freed on a bond of Ksh. 50,000 or deposit a cash bail of Ksh. 20,000.

The prosecution has lined up four key witnesses, including the medical doctor from Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) who attended to her and the investigating officer.
The hearing of the case has been adjourned until July 28, 2026.
