Several people are feared dead after an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated at the centre of Elwak town, Mandera County on Monday.

First responders said five people, comprising a local and four non-locals, were among those severely injured in the mid-morning incident.
There was also heavy gunfire at the affected residential premise which houses non-locals working in the area including teachers, nurses and police officers, according to eyewitnesses.

The premise is located opposite the Elwak Administration Police (AP) camp.

Equity Bank announced the suspension of operations at the Elwak branch following the explosion. The bank however said its branch staff were safe.
