A lively Spring Day celebration in Refilwe, Cullinan, turned tragic on Tuesday, 1 September 2026, when a young man lost his life following a violent confrontation.
Tshepo Nyathi, just 21 years old from South Africa, succumbed to injuries after being stabbed during a festive gathering where youths engaged in the tradition of splashing water on passers-by to mark the onset of spring.
The atmosphere shifted dramatically when the group aimed to drench a 53-year-old man, who reportedly reacted by drawing a knife and fatally wounding Nyathi before fleeing the scene as reported by Briefly.co.za.
Emergency services rushed Nyathi to a local medical facility, but he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Community response to the incident
Following the stabbing, members of the local community tracked down the alleged assailant just a short distance from the site of the incident.
They confronted him and subjected him to physical assault before local authorities arrived to take control of the situation. The suspect was subsequently transported to a medical facility for treatment before being arrested.
Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, a police spokesperson, confirmed to eNCA that an investigation is currently underway regarding the circumstances of the event.
She urged community members to refrain from taking matters into their own hands and to trust law enforcement to manage criminal activities through appropriate legal channels.
The arrested 53-year-old man faces a murder charge and is expected to appear in Cullinan Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
