Fear has gripped learners and teachers at Holy Trinity Girls Secondary School Serewo in West Pokot County following the sinking of four classrooms after they developed huge cracks. Despite the dangerous conditions, students are continuing to attend classes, but they are filled with anxiety due to the dilapidated state of the buildings.

The school management attributes the cracks and the eventual sinking of the classrooms to the poor drainage system in the area, exacerbated by a long period of heavy rainfall. Principal Gladys Andiema noted that several cracks have appeared in the buildings and plaster frequently falls, causing panic among the students.

“I have informed the matter to the higher authorities. We are taking classes after moving students to another room but the library and a number of classrooms are in risky condition,” Andiema told TV47 Digital.
The school management has been forced to relocate learners to other already squeezed classrooms for their safety.

“The buildings are almost falling on students. We have informed the matter to the Education office and they are assessing the situation. Once we get the report, we’ll send it to the higher authorities concerned.” She says.

Kapenguria MP Samuel Moroto visited Holy Trinity Girls Secondary School Serewo on Sunday, June 9, to assess the situation. He stated that an expert would need to inspect the cracks and provide advice on how to address the issue. However, MP Moroto emphasized that the classrooms need to be rebuilt from scratch to ensure the safety and well-being of the students and staff.
