A Nigerian tenant has been left shaken after his landlord’s family arrived at his home to inform him that a body had been buried beneath his living room floor, where he had unknowingly been living for more than a year.

The tenant, who goes by Mr Bachelor on X, shared his ordeal online after the landlord’s relatives showed up without warning, explaining they intended to exhume the remains of a deceased family member buried under the sitting room.

The deceased, as it turned out, was the landlord’s own father.

What made the situation even more unsettling for Mr Bachelor was the fact that he was the first person to ever rent the property, which had been presented to him as a brand new house.

He had no inkling that anything unusual lay beneath the floor until the family arrived to remove the body.

“I rented a house that someone was buried inside the living room and I didn’t know,” he wrote. “He was buried right in my living room, and I was not aware until they came around today. Now I’m shocked that I’ve been living and sleeping above a burial ground for a year plus now.”

The landlord’s family assured him they would repair the sitting room once the coffin was removed. However, Mr Bachelor had just renewed his rent the previous month, leaving him torn between staying and relocating entirely.

“I’m seriously confused about what to do,” he added.

Days after his initial post, Mr Bachelor confirmed that the coffin had been successfully exhumed and moved elsewhere. Despite the ordeal, he expressed little hope of receiving any form of compensation.

“Now, the house you will rent, please. It won’t be easy, I can’t even think of compensation coz I know definitely nothing they will compensate me for coz they’re saying they’re not sending me out, and if I wish to relocate that’d be on me not them,” he wrote.

His post drew strong reactions from other users online.

Sir Sean wrote:

“I know it’s a common practice in some places in Nigeria, but by law, they ought to let you know before renting out the place. You have the right to sue them, but we all know how messedup the judicial system in Nigeria can be. I’d advise you to at least try to get some of your rent back, have them compensate you for any mental distress caused by the situation, and cover the relocation costs for getting another apartment. If it’s possible.”

Temitayo added:

“So you mean for over a year now you have been sleeping, eating, praying on top of someone’s grave and you didn’t know? My brother, first of all, take heart. I know you are shocked right now. But please, on a serious note, do not let them just come and dig your living room anyhow.”

Frances Heart shared her own unsettling rental experience:

“I once rented a place where I kept hearing dragging sounds in the ceiling at night. Landlord swore it was ‘just rats.’ One night the ceiling panel fell open. There was a whole bag of somebody’s old clothes, IDs, and family pics hidden up there.”
