Reports have emerged linking McDonald Mariga to both the Hussein Mohamed camp and the possibility of running independently in the upcoming Football Kenya Federation (FKF) elections. His name is gaining traction as a potential figure capable of driving much-needed reforms within Kenyan football administration.
Mariga’s football journey began at Ulinzi Stars before progressing to Tusker FC and Kenya Pipeline while still a student. He was part of Kamukunji High School’s famous ‘Golden Boys’ team, alongside renowned Kenyan striker Dennis Oliech.
In 2005, Mariga made his move to Sweden, joining third-division club Enköpings SK. His performance quickly caught attention, leading to a signing with Helsingborgs IF. After short stints with Portsmouth and a failed transfer to Manchester City due to work permit issues, Mariga found his footing in Italy’s Serie A with Parma, eventually transferring to Inter Milan.
At Inter, Mariga made history by becoming the first Kenyan to play in the UEFA Champions League, winning the prestigious title in 2010. His successful career also included playing for Spanish clubs Real Sociedad and Real Oviedo before he retired from professional football.
