Toni Kroos Reveals the Weakness That Could Sink Barça in El Clasico

In the build-up to the much-anticipated El Clasico between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, Toni Kroos has shared a revealing insight that could significantly impact the upcoming encounter. The German legend, who recently retired from professional football, pointed out a critical flaw in Barça’s defense that Real Madrid could exploit on Sunday.

During his podcast ‘Einfach mal Luppen’, which he hosts with his brother Alex, Kroos didn’t hold back in his assessment of Barcelona’s vulnerabilities. The former Real Madrid star analyzed Barça’s recent Champions League semi-final exit against Inter Milan, pinpointing a defensive weakness that ultimately led to their downfall.

According to Kroos, the problem lies in Barça’s current defensive lineup, particularly the roles of Iñigo Martínez and Pau Cubarsí. While he acknowledged that both players are technically sound and superior to Ronald Araujo in certain aspects, he believes they are not as quick. This lack of pace, Kroos suggested, is a major risk given Barcelona’s tactical setup under Hansi Flick.

“Iñigo Martínez and Cubarsí are much better than Araujo in terms of positioning and ball control, but they lack speed. Playing the high line that Flick prefers with slower center-backs is risky. I knew this would cost them eventually, and that’s exactly what happened against Inter,” explained Kroos

Real Madrid, who have struggled in previous Clasicos this season, may finally see an opportunity to break their losing streak. With Carlo Ancelotti’s squad featuring pacy attackers like Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappé, Kroos believes that exploiting this defensive gap could be key to victory. He suggested that providing quality balls from midfield, especially if Luka Modric or Arda Güler start, could make all the difference.

Kroos’ remarks come at a time when the stakes couldn’t be higher. This Clasico could decide the La Liga title race, as both teams are neck and neck at the top of the standings. Real Madrid, who were rested after their victory against Celta Vigo, are looking to put on a performance that not only ends their Clasico drought but also strengthens their title aspirations.

The tactical battle between Flick and Ancelotti will be fascinating to watch, especially considering the contrasting styles of both coaches. While Flick has instilled a more aggressive, high-pressing philosophy at Barça, Ancelotti relies on counter-attacking precision and quick transitions, which could prove decisive given Barça’s defensive setup.

Kroos also hinted at the mental aspect of the game, suggesting that Barcelona’s Champions League exit might still be on their minds. Real Madrid, on the other hand, are riding high after their recent domestic victories and will look to capitalize on any signs of hesitation from their arch-rivals.

Barça’s reliance on Martínez and Cubarsí to hold the backline against the likes of Vinicius and Mbappé could turn into a tactical nightmare. If Real Madrid can isolate these defenders in one-on-one situations, it may spell trouble for the Blaugrana.

The German maestro also pointed out that Hansi Flick’s system, while effective in dominating possession, can leave gaps when facing rapid counter-attacks. Real Madrid, renowned for their deadly breaks, may look to force Barça into high-risk situations where their lack of defensive pace becomes evident.

Despite the criticisms, Kroos did acknowledge that Barcelona remains formidable, particularly with their aggressive midfield pressing and technical wingers. However, he believes that Real Madrid’s chance to exploit the defensive frailties should not be underestimated.

The upcoming Clasico will undoubtedly be intense, with the atmosphere at Montjuïc expected to be electric. Both sets of fans know that this game could define the season, and for Real Madrid, it’s a chance to not only redeem their previous defeats but to deliver a statement of intent in the title race.

Kroos ended his analysis by emphasizing that for Real Madrid to succeed, they must focus on quick ball movement and creating isolation scenarios for their wingers. If Ancelotti’s men can execute this plan, Barça’s title hopes might take a significant hit.

As Sunday approaches, all eyes will be on how Hansi Flick adjusts his defensive setup in response to Kroos’ observations. Will Barça tighten their lines to mitigate the risk, or will Real Madrid find a way to exploit the revealed weakness? One thing is certain—the football world will be watching closely.
