A traffic police officer in Mombasa has died after a motorist who attempted to evade a traffic stop ended up running over him.
According to a police report on Tuesday, Julius Marwa was controlling traffic flow at Buxton junction when he hailed a motorist for a traffic check.
Osman Jama Abdi, who was driving a Silver Toyota Ractis, declined to turn off the engine to allow officer Marwa to conduct the check.
Officer Marwa is then said to have opened the driver’s door to turn off the ignition when Abdi grabbed his hand and immediately stepped on the gas, speeding off.
After driving for a distance of about 200 meters Marwa is said to have been pushed out of the car and got run over by the rear right wheel, sustaining a head injury and multiple fractures on the pelvic.
“He was rushed to Jocham hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival,” read part of the statement.
His body has been taken to the hospital’s mortuary awaiting postmortem.
Subsequent investigations led to the Abdi’s arrest who was found locked inside his car at a basement parking within beach road estate in Nyali.
The car was towed to Makupa Police Station where Abdi is also detained.
