The police in Homa Bay engaged in a shootout with suspected armed robbers along the Homa Bay-Kendu Bay Road, resulting in the death of two suspects. The officers, from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI), had been trailing the suspects from Homa Bay Town towards Kendu Bay in a saloon car.
When the suspects reached Got Kokech village, they opened fire on the trailing officers, prompting the police to return fire. The exchange of gunfire caused the suspects’ car to lose control and land in a ditch.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing the suspects and the officers exchanging fire before the suspects attempted to flee into a nearby maize plantation.
During the pursuit, one suspect was shot about 500 meters from the location where the car lost control, while the other was shot dead more than a kilometer away. One of the suspects attempted to hide in a river but was gunned down.
Upon searching the suspects’ car, the investigators found various items, including cheque books, bank documents, money, a flat-screen TV set, a pistol, and an AK-47 rifle.
The identity of the suspects is yet to be confirmed, but their fingerprints will be taken on Tuesday to aid in identification.
The bodies of the deceased suspects were taken to the Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary as investigations into the incident continue.
