The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said on Thursday that the operation was conducted along the Thika-Garissa Highway, where Officers intercepted a Zafanana coach travelling from Dadaab to Nairobi.
DCI said a search of the bus led to the discovery of a blue woven bag placed in the overhead luggage rack serving passengers seated at positions 23, 24 and 25.
“What appeared to be an ordinary consignment of meat concealed a far more sinister secret. Meticulously tucked inside pieces of meat was a black nylon package containing 48 rounds of 7.62×39mm ammunition, compatible with AK-47 assault rifles,” DCI said.
The bus driver, Samuel Ngui Munyithya, and his turnboy Justus Muatha Kiola were arrested after they failed to account for the package or identify its owner.
The suspects were taken to Kanyonyoo Police Station and placed in custody as investigators work to establish who owned the ammunition and its intended destination.
The bus was also detained at the police station, and the ammunition has been secured as exhibit while investigations ensue.
