Emmanuel Wanyonyi, the World 800m silver medalist and Diamond Trophy winner, showcased his exceptional talent once again at the Diamond League Meeting in Rabat, Morocco, on Sunday night, May 19.
Despite facing a formidable field that included Commonwealth Games champion Wycliffe Kinyamal and Olympic champion Emmanuel Korir, Wanyonyi delivered an extraordinary performance to win the 800m race.
Clocking an impressive time of 1:43.98, the 19-year-old athlete from Saboti, West Kenya, demonstrated his growing prowess in the 800 meters. Kinyamal finished second in 1:44.09, while Yanis Meziane secured third place with a time of 1:44.13.
Reflecting on his victory in challenging conditions, Wanyonyi expressed his satisfaction with the win, despite the windy conditions in Rabat. He remains focused on his ultimate goal of securing a medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Wanyonyi’s triumph in Rabat is a testament to his talent and determination, setting the stage for further success on the international stage.
“Now, I will go back to Kenya and discuss with my coach. I am hoping to race in Eugene Diamond League, but the ultimate goal this season is performing in the Olympic Games,” he added.
Earlier this year, in April, Wanyonyi set a road mile world record at the Road to Records event in Herzogenaurach, Germany.
