Jamaican dancehall icon Vybz Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, sparked concerns after falling ill during a party at a popular Kingston nightclub on Monday night. The incident raised alarms among fans, especially given Kartel’s known health struggles. However, sources close to the “Comet” hitmaker reassured the public, telling the *Jamaican Observer* that the musician was “doing fine” after the unsettling episode.
Videos circulating on social media show Kartel being helped out of the club, further intensifying worries about his condition. Kartel, who has been diagnosed with Graves’ disease, a thyroid disorder, appeared visibly unwell in the footage. A disc jockey at the club can be heard asking patrons near Kartel to clear the area as he sat on the rails, surrounded by concerned onlookers who tried to cool him down using rags and other items. Eventually, Kartel was escorted out of the venue, holding onto several security guards for support.
Reports from Jamaican media confirmed that Kartel experienced breathing difficulties while at Meca Nightclub, where he was attending the event with his wife, Sidem. He had to pause the celebration, asking the crowd to step back due to the intense heat and his struggle to breathe.
Earlier this year, a report by *Fox 5 News* brought Kartel’s health problems into the spotlight, revealing a medical affidavit from his doctor. The affidavit confirmed that he suffers from Graves’ disease, which, along with a worsening heart condition, has caused significant health issues. The thyroid disorder has led to noticeable swelling in Kartel’s neck and face, as well as bulging eyes, which is why he frequently wears oversized sunglasses. His heart condition is also reportedly severe enough that surgery may be necessary.
Kartel is not alone in battling Graves’ disease, with other celebrities like Wendy Williams, Sia, and Missy Elliott having shared their experiences with the condition.
In August, Kartel was released from prison after judges decided against a retrial for the murder case he had been involved in. Convicted in 2014 for the killing of Clive “Lizard” Williams, Kartel has consistently maintained his innocence. UK judges overturned his conviction in March of this year, paving the way for his freedom.
