Who is General Francis Ogolla? Quick facts about the late CDF

General Francis Omondi Ogolla, the late Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) of Kenya, was born in Siaya County on FFebruary12, 1962.

His distinguished military career spanned nearly four decades and was marked by an unwavering commitment to service and leadership.

Here are some of the highlights of his remarkable journey:

General Ogolla was commissioned into the Kenya Defence Forces as an Officer Cadet on May 2, 1984.

He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant on May 3, 1985 and was subsequently posted to Moi Air Base where he underwent pilot training, laying the foundation for his illustrious career in aviation.

Command and leadership roles

During his tenure in the Kenya Defence Forces, General Ogolla held various command, staff and leadership positions. Notable among these was his command as Commanding Officer of the Laikipia Air Base Tactical Flight Wing in 2007 and his subsequent role as Base Commander of Laikipia Air Base from 2008 to 2014.

Promotions and appointments

General Ogolla’s exemplary performance earned him promotions and significant leadership roles within the military hierarchy.

He was promoted to the rank of Brigadier on April 10, 2012 and served as Deputy Commander of the Air Force.

He subsequently rose to the rank of Major General on July 13, 2018, assuming the position of Commander of the Kenya Air Force.

His illustrious career culminated in his appointment as Deputy Chief of Defence Forces and later as Chief of Defence Forces on April 28, 2023.

Honours and Awards

In recognition of his dedicated service and outstanding contributions to the nation, General Ogolla has been awarded several prestigious medals and honours.

These include the Moran of the Golden Heart (MGH), the Elder of the Burning Spars and the Head of State Commendation, all of which underline his exemplary leadership and dedication to duty.

Family and legacy

General Francis Omondi Ogolla is survived by his widow, Mrs Aileen Kathambi Ogolla, and their two children, Lorna Achieng Omondi and Joel Rabuku Omondi Ogolla.

He is also survived by a daughter-in-law, Muthoni Njenga Mwaura, and a grandson, Taji Mbarara.

General Francis Ogolla’s legacy is one of unwavering commitment, exemplary leadership and selfless service to the nation.

His contributions to the Kenya Defence Forces and his commitment to the security of the nation will be remembered and honoured for generations to come.

He lost his life in a chopper crash on April 18 at at Sindar area, Kaben location, Tot division, in Elgeyo Marakwet County.
