The KCB women’s volleyball team reaffirmed their dominance in the Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) 2023/2024 season by clinching the championship title for the second year in a row. They delivered a commanding performance with a decisive 3-0 sets victory (25-22, 25-17, 25-21) over Kenya Prisons in the third final match at the Kasarani Indoor Arena.
Throughout the three-legged final, KCB showcased their superiority, achieving an aggregate score of 2-1 (3-0, 3-0, 0-3). Their relentless attacks from the start overwhelmed Kenya Prisons’ defense, paving the way for a dominant display. Head coach Japheth Munala expressed immense pride in his team’s achievement, acknowledging the tough journey to retain the title.
“On our road to victory, we encountered very competitive teams like DCI, Kenya Army, and Kenya Prisons, but despite all the challenges, the girls did well to retain the title,” he said.
A standout performer for KCB was outside hitter Juliana Namutira, who earned the Most Valuable Player (MVP) title for her exemplary performance against Kenya Prisons. Coach Japheth Munala praised her abilities, stating, “It is not a miracle that she has been named the MVP. She is a very good player and she has the potential to become better.”
Despite the loss, Kenya Prisons’ head coach Josp Baraza commended his team’s effort and their second-place finish, attributing the defeat to poor reception, weak services, and ineffective blocking. “We started the game well, but our reception, blocking, and services became bad gradually, which resulted in us losing the game,” Baraza commented. Reflecting on their progress from bronze medalists last season to silver this season, Coach Baraza expressed optimism about their prospects for the next season.
He emphasized the need for strategic reinforcements in the form of left attackers, setters, and a central player to bolster their chances of claiming the title.
Additionally, Baraza appealed to the federation to consider making the finals a single-leg tie instead of the current three-legged format, hoping for a more decisive and exciting conclusion to the championship. With this latest triumph, KCB has solidified their position as the top team in Kenyan women’s volleyball, setting a high standard for their rivals to match in the coming seasons.
