One person died and nine others were injured on Wednesday, April 5 following an accident involving two school buses on the Kagio-Baricho road in Kirinyaga County.
Eyewitnesses said those injured included eight students and a school manager.
They also noted that the driver of one of the buses lost control of the vehicle as he attempted to overtake the other which was picking up a student.
The area residents combined efforts to remove students trapped in the buses and rushed them to hospital.
The deceased, a private teacher, was moved to a nearby morgue.
“We tried what we could. Good samaritans rushed the pupils to different hospitals in Kirinyaga County,” Grace Kanini an area resident stated.
Police arrived at the scene and towed the bus wreckages to the station.
School bus accident
The incident comes days after eight students from Mariira secondary school in Murang’a County sustained severe injuries after an accident that involved a school bus they were traveling in.
In the accident that occurred along the Naormoru-Nanyuki road, the bus ferrying 34 students overturned after the driver lost control.
The students were heading to Ol Pejeta conservancy in Laikipia county for an education tour.
“Following the accident, we have received 34 students. Eight of them have serious injuries and are in the theatre. Some had minor injuries but the majority suffered shock and are undergoing counselling,” Laikipia county director of medical services Waihenya Mwangi said.
