Eleven students from Sacred Heart Mukumu Girls High School were on Friday, May 14, 2023, rushed to a nearby hospital after they complained of various symptoms days after the school re-opened.
According to the school Principal Sister Jane Mmbone, two students, currently being treated at St Elizabeth Mukumu Mission Hospital, were diagnosed with malaria and nine others complained of fatigue and abdominal pain.
The principal affirmed that the students are responding fairly to treatment and that three have been discharged so far.
“In fact, three of the students have been discharged after their condition improved and are back in school,” the principal said.
The school was closed indefinitely after three students and a boarding mistress died due to a bacterial infection that affected 500 others.
Mukumu re-opens
The school re-opened on Monday, May 8, 2023.
To avert similar cases in the future, a nurse has been posted at the school to attend to emergencies before the students are transferred to hospitals.
Western Region Director of Education Jared Obiero who led a team of government officials in inspecting facilities at the school noted that they were confident that measures put in place will bring sanity and restore confidence in parents as the learners report to school.
“We are confident that the measures that have been put in place will restore confidence in our parents to bring back all the learners to school.
“The Form Four students have lost more than two weeks and need to settle down and recover the lost time while preparing for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education exam at the end of the year,” he stated.
