Police in Siaya County are investigating an incident where a 16-year-old girl allegedly killed her 9-year-old niece using a spear at Nyandiwa village in Alego/Usonga sub-county.

Nyandiwa Sub-location Assistant Chief Joseph Otieno Aloo reported to Siaya Police Station that there was a murder incident at Nyandiwa village.

According to Siaya County Police Commander Cleti Kimaiyo, officers from Siaya Police Station rushed to the scene and established that the suspect who is mentally ill was playing within their homestead with other young children.

He stated that suddenly there was a misunderstanding between them before the suspect entered into her father’s house and picked a spear which she threw at them and accidentally hit the nine-year-old on the head killing her instantly.

Confirming the incident, Mr. Kimaiyo said the scene was processed and documented before the body was moved to Siaya County Referral Hospital as investigations into the matter continue.

The suspect was arrested and is assisting police with investigations. The murder weapon was also recovered and kept as exhibit.
