The ongoing voluntary disarmament exercise in Elgeyo Marakwet County continues to record success, with two more illegal AK-47 rifles surrendered at Embobut Police Station.

According to the National Police Service (NPS), the latest surrender marks another milestone in the government’s sustained efforts to promote peace and stability in the region, which has historically been affected by banditry and cattle rustling.

In a statement on Thursday, November 6, 2025, NPS revealed that to date, a total of 301 illegal firearms, 2,175 rounds of ammunition, and one rifle grenade have been recovered in Elgeyo Marakwet County since the launch of the initiative.

This follows Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen’s commitment to a relentless crackdown on illegal firearms in the North Rift.

The police say the continued cooperation of local residents has been crucial in advancing the exercise’s objectives.

“The National Police Service commends the continued cooperation of local residents in supporting this initiative to enhance peace, security, and stability in the region.”

“We encourage the public to maintain their support by providing information at their nearest police station, or by calling 999, 911, or 112. Information can also be provided via the #FichuaKwaDCIinitiative on the toll-free number 0800 722 203 or via WhatsApp on 0709 570 000.”

Kerio Valley

This comes a few months after Kerio Valley residents voluntarily surrendered 27 illegal firearms, including AK-47 and G3 rifles, to police in Tot, Elgeyo Marakwet County.

In a statement on Thursday, September 25, the National Police Service (NPS) revealed that the firearms were handed over through the cooperation of community members and Peace Committees drawn from Ketut, Chemwonyo, Kibaimwa, Mon, Chesuman, Kaben, and Endo.

“The weapons have been taken into safe custody. This latest surrender brings the total number of firearms recovered under ‘Operation Rudisha Bunduki’ to 232, along with 1,595 rounds of ammunition,” read the statement in part.

The residents had earlier surrendered 22 illegal firearms.

Further, the NPS has hailed the initiative, commending local leaders, elders, and residents for demonstrating goodwill and prioritising security over conflict.

“Members of the public are encouraged to continue supporting the amnesty by volunteering information and surrendering illegal arms.”
