Two people died and 25 others were injured after a 14-seater matatu they were travelling in rolled at Muliilii area along Wote-Makindu road in Makueni County on Sunday, August 20.

Makindu OCPD Jashon Bolooh confirmed the accident, saying the deceased included a middle-aged woman and a 5-year-old child.

According to the police boss, the overloaded matatu was heading to Makindu from Wote when it rolled several times.

The injured persons were taken to Makindu Sub-county Hospital for treatment.

Patrick Mutinda, the doctor in charge of the facility, said they received 10 men and 15 women who sustained injuries during the clash.

Out of the 25 victims, seven were children below 10 years.

Mutinda noted that six of the casualties sustained serious injuries and were admitted at the facility while the others were treated and released to go home.

“We have received 25 people who have been injured in the Wote-Makindu accident, we have admitted six of them who suffered critical injuries. We have also received two dead bodies from the same accident,” Mutinda said.

The accident occurred a day after three passengers were confirmed dead and an unknown number injured after a grisly road accident near Kalamba market along Kitui-Kibwezi road in Makueni County.

Confirming the Saturday accident, Kibwezi Assistant County Commissioner Agnes Maswai said those who died included two men and a woman.

Maswai said the ill-fated vehicle was heading to Nairobi when it developed mechanical problems and lost control near Kalamba market.

The injured persons were rushed to Amref-Kibwezi Hospital in Makueni for medical attention while the bodies of the deceased were taken to Makindu Sub-county Hospital mortuary.
