A two-year-old boy was choked to death after a balloon he was playing with got stuck in his throat in the Waruku area, Dagoretti, Nairobi.
The incident took place on Monday, January 8, when the two-year-old tried to blow it, but instead, he put it in his mouth and swallowed it.
As per the police report, the boy’s mother told the police that it choked him as he could not breathe.
The family and neighbours rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police were called to the scene and processed the body to the mortuary pending an autopsy and further probe.
In November 2023, a three-year-old boy was also choked to death by a balloon he had swallowed.
The incident took place in Kiamaiko after the boy collapsed as he played with other children and developed breathing difficulties.
Those treating him said they had no idea he had swallowed a balloon he had been playing with.
He had allegedly picked up the balloon from where he and other children were playing, unaware of the danger to himself.
He was rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Officers examined him and found a piece of balloon stuck in his windpipe, which is believed to have caused his death.
