Police in Kwale are holding a 22-year-old woman after she allegedly dumped her newborn baby in a 10-foot pit latrine minutes after giving birth.

According to reports, the Form 4 student from Mudzi Mure Village in Matuga Subcounty gave birth around midnight and then abandoned the baby.

Residents rescued the baby around 11 a.m. on Thursday after hearing cries.

It was then discovered that the girl who had delivered the previous night could not give the whereabouts of her newborn.

Matuga police responded and took the baby and mother to Kwale Subcounty Hospital for treatment.

Police have started investigations into the matter.
