Three people are reported to have gone missing following an Al-Shabaab militant attack along the Lamu-Witu-Garsen Highway.
The victims are believed to have been held hostage following the Tuesday dawn attack.
According to Lamu County Commissioner Louis Rono, the victims were travelling in a vehicle that veered off the road and rolled into the bush.
“Suspected Al-Shabaab militants had waylaid vehicles plying the route; unfortunately, as one of the drivers sped off from the militants, his car veered off the road and rolled inside the bush, where three occupants are believed to have gone missing, and two others managed to escape to safety,” he said.
Sprayed with bullets
Rono further added that a Prorbox vehicle that was sprayed with bullets by the militants had six occupants, but no one was injured.
“The Probox that was ferrying passengers from Mombasa to Mihiloi was the first target; however, the driver managed to speed off, and all the occupants are safe,” he added.
Rono noted that the security apparatus in the area was on high alert following the attack.
“Security has been intensified. We are tracing the militants, who are believed to have retreated back to Boni Forest,” he stated.
The over 20 heavily armed militants are suspected to have laid ambush along the busy highway, targeting vehicles plying the routes.
