Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are holding three suspects linked to a motorcycle theft syndicate that has allegedly been operating between Kenya and Tanzania.

In a statement on Tuesday, July 4, 2023, the DCI said the suspects have been stealing motorcycles in the country and reselling them in the neighbouring country.

The suspects are said to have masterminded theft of bikes in various towns before ferrying them to Loitoktok town from where they are sneaked into Tanzania.

Detectives managed to track down the gang following the arrest of a woman identified as Agnes Wambui believed to have been used by the criminal group as “bait” for boda boda operators.

DCI said Wambui, posing as a passenger, lured her victims and drugged them along the way before escaping with their motorcycles.

“Posing as a pillion passenger, Wambui stupefies her victims along the way before disappearing with the motorbikes, once the nduthimen lose consciousness,” DCI said.

After interrogation, Wambui led detectives to her accomplices identified as Daniel Mwaniki and William Nkadanyo alias Saningo, who the police have since established have pending criminal cases in Ongata Rongai, Kajiado County and in Diani, Kwale County.

“Nkadanyo was arrested in Loitoktok town where he is believed to have a ready market for the stolen motorcycles,” DCI said.

The suspects were found with stolen mobile phones with sleuths linking one of the gadgets to a recent motorcycle theft incident. At least 30 stupefying tablets were also recovered from the gang.

“Stolen mobile phones were also recovered from the suspects including one that had been stolen from a motorbike rider, who was stupefied before he also lost his bike in Juja, Kiambu County.

“Over 30 tablets believed to be stupefying drugs were also recovered from the suspects, who were discovered to have pending criminal cases in Ongata Rongai, Kajiado County and in Diani, Kwale County,” DCI added.
