A record 513 junior officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations have embarked on a crush training programme that will harden them ahead of deployment.
This will help fill gaps noticed in operations within the DCI.
The department is facing huge demand for officers to fill various sections to enable them meet their expectations.
The Director DCI Mohamed Amin, flanked by the Commandant General Service Unit Eliud Lagat and other senior officers from the DCI and GSU, officiated the opening of Police Constables to Corporals and Corporals to Sergeants promotional courses for the 513 officers of the DCI at the National Police College – Magadi Field Campus.
This is the first time in the history of the DCI that the Directorate is training its officers for promotions.
This follows the Inspector General’s approval that the third stone of the three services under the NPS umbrella had the capacity to train and promote its staff, officials said.
Immediately after the approval of the request made by DCI boss, another cohort of police sergeants secured their admission to the National Criminal Investigations Academy (NCIA) in South C, and are halfway into completion of their senior sergeant course.
The officers will undergo a vigorous four-month training under the instructions of trainers drawn from the DCI, who will ensure that they stand ready to take up new responsibilities once they are made up.
Emphasising the need for the trainees to embrace determination, teamwork and discipline, Amin reminded the cadets that the training was structurally objective and was meant to nurture them into becoming the future commanders of the National Police Service looked up to.
“We know you are the backbone of the service and hence these sessions are meant to help you be better,” Amin said.
He assured the trainees of his commitment to ensure equal opportunities to all DCI personnel in matters of transfers, training, attachments and secondment.
Lagat pledged his full support to the Directorate to ensure the successful completion of the courses, further congratulating the cadets for their well-earned promotion considerations.
Insiders said the department has now opened international courses to all cadres of officers.
“We have seen many officers go for such courses and get promoted at a higher and motivating rate. This is good for the service at large,” said an insider aware of the trend.
A number of other officers are undergoing various trainings including those on intelligence collection and analysis.
This will also see them get management training and other related fields, officials said.
Other senior officers who graced the event included the Commandant NCIA Gatiria Mboroki, the Director Personnel Francis Ndiema, Commanding Officer GSU Magadi Field Campus Charles Naibei and Director Training Edwin Kamau.
Others were Director Operations Richard Mwaura, Director Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau Denis Okadapau, Deputy Director Logistics Marion Shako, PA to the DCI Lawrence Some and Director Liaison and Corporate Communications John Marete.
Amin has also been visiting regions to understand the challenges his officers are facing.
He said despite the fact that he once served in some of the places, times have changed and hence the demands are now unique.
