Seven passengers are feared to have lost their lives after a bus they had boarded was involved in an accident along Kanyadhiang-Pala Road in Karachuonyo constituency, Homa Bay county.
According to eyewitnesses, the bus owned by ACK Guu Secondary School overturned after the driver lost control while avoiding hitting an oncoming speeding truck.
A witness stated that the lorry driver caused confusion leading to the accident. He escaped after the accident.
“Instead of stopping and letting the other driver pass, he moved past the bus and created confusion in the process,” he said.
While confirming the incident, Rachuonyo North sub-county police commander Lydia Parteyie noted that the bus ferrying 39 mourners veered off and landed on a ditch. The mourners were heading to their destination after attending a funeral in West Karachuonyo.
She noted that police who arrived at the scene were able to rescue 32 out of the 39 passengers. Those injured were rushed to a nearby health facility and are currently receiving treatment.
A section of boda boda riders who had parked nearby were also injured during the accident.
“We have rushed injured persons to the hospitals for medical attention,” the police boss stated.
While assuring residents that police would investigate the incident, Parteyie noted that they were yet to establish the number of casualties in the unfortunate incident.
The wreckage of the bus was towed to the police station.
