Over 70 people who were arrested last week during Friday’s Saba Saba demonstrations have been released.

This is after the prosecutor told the court on Monday that he has received instructions for the persons not to be charged.

Friday’s protests across the country were organised by the opposition to picket against the high cost of living.

But in Nairobi, where opposition leader Raila Odinga led a rally at Kamukunji Grounds, police engaged in running battles with protesters and in the melee that ensued, dozens were arrested and taken into custody at the Central Police Station.

On Saturday, police attached to the station lobbed tear gas at a group of human rights activists, former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga being among them.

Odinga has meanwhile kickstarted an initiative aimed at pushing President William Ruto and his government out of office.
