A somber mood engulfed Miiri village in Mukurweini constituency, Nyeri County after relatives were forced to bury the body of an 85-year-old granny who was beheaded while asleep by unknown assailants three months ago.

The body of Juliah Muthoni, killed 67 days ago, has been lying at Mukurwe-ini Hospital mortuary where the bills were accumulating day by day.

The mass was conducted at Gathukimundu Catholic Church where the deceased was a member of the Catholic Women Action (CWA).

According to her nephew, Weru Mwangi, the family decided to bury their kin without finding the head as the mortuary fee was escalating fast and they feared that it could get out of hand.

“We have tried as much to look for her head everywhere without any success and we had no other choice than to bury her as the mortuary fee was escalating every day and we feared that we might end up being unable to pay,” he said.

They also expressed their discontent with the police investigations since no arrests have been made three months later.

“As a family, we are not contented with police investigations because how comes after 67 days no arrest or finding has been made? We are not happy about this and we are left with no choice but to bury our kin,” Mwangi said.

The family is now calling on the security forces to ensure that the culprits behind the heinous act are brought to book and justice served.

“We want to know what happened and why an elderly woman would be beheaded and for what reason, ” Mwangi said.

Muthoni who was suffering from dementia before her demise was found dead on her bed by her grandchild in the morning of March 11, 2022, after she delayed waking up.

Detectives from Mukurweini police station were informed and a search was conducted but to no avail.
