Machakos County Governor Wavinya Ndeti has hit back at her predecessor, the Cabinet Minister for Labour and Social Protection, Alfred Mutua, for claiming that her administration has failed to maintain the Machakos People’s Park.

In a social media post on Tuesday, Wavinya dismissed these allegations, saying that for more than a decade, billions of shillings were allocated to the county, yet many sectors remained underdeveloped.

However, she believes that during her first four years in office, the residents have experienced the full benefits of devolution.

“It is quite laughable to watch former Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua, now a Cabinet Secretary, attempt to resurrect his long-dormant “Cobra Squad” filming career apparently at a time when his political fortunes within UDA appear increasingly uncertain,” she said.

According to her, the youth had limited opportunities to acquire practical skills and create pathways to self-employment. To address this, her administration established the Machakos Youth Service (MYS), which she now says has transformed the lives of thousands of young people.

In her defence, she noted that her government has significantly improved the county’s roads and infrastructure, which she claims had suffered years of neglect.

Additionally, the governor pointed to her success in improving the County’s healthcare, early childhood and nutrition, as well as the agricultural sector, saying that within the four years, Machakos has been ranked among the country’s leading maize producers.

Her remarks follow allegations made by Mutua on Tuesday purporting that she had neglected the public facility. The CS described what he saw at the park as “deeply concerning” and said it is a shadow of what it once was.

“It breaks my heart to see a facility that was built with public resources and great vision allowed to deteriorate to such a level that people now jokingly refer to it as a m’snake park’, ” wrote Mutua in a social media post.

Wavinya maintained that she inherited a demotivated workforce that had limited opportunities for training and capacity building.

She revealed that her administration strengthened accountability in staff facilitation, with DSA and other payments sent directly to individual employees’ accounts for work undertaken, ensuring transparency and fairness.

The Governor said that the story of the current Machakos is not only about results, but also about putting resources where they directly improve the lives of the residents.
