A police officer who was reportedly being held on criminal allegations died inside a detention cell at Tanga District Police Station in the early hours of August 27, 2026.
Corporal Mwita, identified by police service number H. 1796, was found dead at 1:03 am.
He was among a group of seven individuals in custody at the time, comprising one officer and five other police officers of varying ranks, all of whom were facing criminal allegations.
Forensic Examination Reveal Cause of Death
Following the discovery of the body, a forensic examination was carried out in the presence of Corporal Mwita’s relatives.The examination established that the cause of death was lack of air.
His remains were subsequently released to his family to facilitate burial arrangements, with the cooperation of the Police Force.
The Tanga Regional Police Force confirmed the incident through an official statement issued on August 31, 2026, signed by the Regional Police Commander.
In the statement, the Tanga Regional Police Force cautioned members of the public, media outlets and social media users against circulating unverified information or drawing conclusions ahead of the official investigation. Authorities described such conduct as misinformation and noted that it is contrary to the law.
“The Tanga Regional Police Force continues to emphasise its commitment to ensuring that the investigation into this incident is completed in accordance with all investigative procedures, as provided for by law, regulations and established procedures,” the statement read.
The death of a serving police officer inside a police detention facility raises serious questions about the conditions under which detainees, including officers themselves, are held.
No further details regarding the criminal allegations against the deceased or his colleagues were disclosed in the official statement.
