Kenyan actress Nyaboke Moraa has pulled back the curtain on a painful chapter of her life, revealing that she was once trapped in an abusive marriage that she carefully concealed behind a cheerful public image.
In a raw Facebook post shared on 31 August, the actress wrote in Swahili that casual observers would never guess what she had been through.
“If you glance at me quickly, you would never know I was once married to a man who used to beat me like a donkey,” she wrote.
She followed that gut-punch of a confession with a lighter note, sharing that her mother has been pushing her to enter a beauty contest, insisting she is too beautiful to keep herself out of the spotlight.
Nyaboke’s smile hid the pain
What makes the post particularly striking is her honesty about the gap between how she appeared and what she was actually living through.
“Some of us hide a lot behind our smiles,” she wrote, a line that resonated deeply given just how much she has endured in recent years.
Nyaboke’s life has been marked by extraordinary grief. In July 2024, she lost her oldest daughter, Marie Achieng, who was just 19 years old.
The loss came after she had already mourned both her niece and her brother earlier that same year.
Then in October 2024, her former father-in-law passed away, heartbreakingly on the same calendar date as her daughter’s death months before.
Around that same period, the actress also opened up about a romantic relationship that collapsed while she was still deep in mourning.
She revealed that her then-boyfriend ended things with her, reportedly egged on by his friends who encouraged him to walk away while she was at her lowest.
