New Zealand has announced an update that could allow eligible young travellers from the United Kingdom and Canada to remain in the country for almost two years under its working holiday visa programme.
The change extends the permitted stay from the standard 12 months available to citizens of most participating countries.
According to a report published by YEN.com.gh, British and Canadian passport holders may qualify to stay in New Zealand for up to 23 months on a working holiday visa.
Longer stays for British and Canadian citizens
The extended period gives eligible visitors more time to travel around New Zealand, gain work experience and experience life in the country.
New Zealand’s working holiday scheme operates through agreements with different countries.
It generally allows young people to live and work in New Zealand for a specific period, with age limits typically ranging from 18 to 30 or 35, depending on the applicant’s nationality.
The longer duration available to citizens of the UK and Canada is linked to the arrangements between those countries and New Zealand.
Conditions applicants must meet
Travellers seeking the visa must still satisfy the usual requirements. These include meeting the applicable age limit, proving they have enough money and holding a valid passport from an eligible country.
The programme remains attractive to young people because it allows them to combine employment with travel. New Zealand is also known for opportunities in industries such as agriculture, hospitality and tourism.
