Danny Ellerd, a former homeless man from Oklahoma City, went from being discovered near death under a highway bridge to earning a perfect academic record at university — a turnaround that has moved thousands of people online.
Danny’s own father drives past him
David J Harris Jr shared Danny’s story on Facebook on September 3, 2026, describing a man who had battled addiction for approximately 15 years, losing his housing and eventually ending up panhandling on street corners.
At one point, Danny’s own father drove past him without immediately recognising the gaunt figure holding a sign as his son.
His lowest moment arrived beneath an Interstate 40 overpass in Oklahoma City, where police encountered him and intended to make an arrest on outstanding warrants.
Danny stabilised in hospital
He was in such critical condition, however, weighing only 92 pounds and suffering from a severely infected hand, that officers took him to hospital instead.
Medical staff worked to stabilise him and treat the infection before he was discharged.
With little more than a carrier bag of clothing, Danny entered the Hope Is Alive recovery programme. Progress was neither smooth nor swift.
What course did Danny study?
Each day demanded a fresh set of deliberate decisions: staying sober, turning up, seeking support, and eventually extending that support to others.
By August 2023, Danny had enrolled full-time at Oklahoma State University-Oklahoma City, studying Computer Information Systems while also holding down part-time work.
He finished with a 4.0 GPA, a result that caught the attention of the institution’s academic community.
Danny recognised with the Women for OSU Scholar award
In April 2025, OSU recognised him with the Women for OSU Scholar award, an honour acknowledging both academic excellence and meaningful service to others. What followed his graduation was, by many accounts, the most significant chapter yet.
Danny began working directly with people experiencing homelessness, sponsored men navigating their own recovery journeys, and authored a book titled Recovery Is Possible.
The man who once lay beneath a bridge, too ill to be arrested, now dedicates his time to proving to others that recovery is not merely an aspiration.
