The family of a police officer whose body was found abandoned in a thicket in Kabete is demanding justice as detectives continue investigating her death.
Relatives of 46-year-old Sergeant Gladys Nyaguthe Kirika are now awaiting two key developments, a post-mortem examination and the arraignment of the main suspect, in their search for answers.
Florence Wangui, the deceased’s sister, said the family hoped the two processes would shed light on what happened to Kirika and establish the circumstances surrounding her death.
The suspect, Patrick Chege, is currently receiving treatment at St Luke’s Hospital in Kinoo under tight police security after allegedly attempting to take his own life.
Did Kinoo police officer admit killing wife?
The case came to light on Thursday, September 3, when Chege reportedly went to Kinoo Police Station and informed the deputy Officer Commanding Station (OCS) that he had killed his wife and disposed of her body in bushes in Kagira.
Police officers from Kabete Police Station then launched a search of the area, eventually locating the body of an adult woman hidden in dense vegetation.
Investigators recovered a certificate of appointment from the body, identifying the deceased as Sergeant Kirika, a police officer attached to Subuiga Police Station in Buuri West Sub-County, Meru County.
Preliminary observations at the scene pointed to a possible violent confrontation.
The officer had serious injuries to her head, which investigators believe may have been inflicted using a blunt object. She also had injuries on her left hand.
Detectives further observed deep marks on her legs, raising suspicions that she may have been tied with a rope before or during the alleged assault.
A hammer and a Maasai sword were also recovered from the scene and taken as exhibits as detectives continued gathering evidence.
DCI takes over investigation
After the scene was processed, Kirika’s body was taken to PCEA Kikuyu Funeral Home, where a post-mortem examination is expected to establish the cause and circumstances of her death.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), through the Dagoretti Division, has since taken over the investigation.
Chege is expected to be presented in court and charged with murder once doctors establish that he is medically fit to stand trial.
The family continues to await the findings of the post-mortem and the next stage of the legal process as investigators work to establish what led to the police officer’s death.
