Grief has settled over the Nyimba community in Zambia’s Eastern Province after a 26-year-old man allegedly took the lives of his girlfriend’s two young children following a violent domestic dispute.
Winston Lungu was arrested with assistance from community members after allegedly fleeing the scene and is now detained at Nyimba Police Station.
Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba confirmed that Lungu is expected to appear in court.
What Happened Between Phiri and Boyfriend at Midnight?
The incident unfolded around midnight on September 17, 2026, when Lungu allegedly visited the home of his girlfriend, 23-year-old Mary Phiri, while in an intoxicated state. Phiri was asleep alongside her two children when he arrived and began knocking at the door.
Fearing that he might turn violent given his condition, Phiri initially held back from opening the door. Police say Lungu then allegedly began breaking a window, which prompted her to let him in to prevent further damage to the property. A heated argument followed, which escalated into a physical confrontation.
During the altercation, Phiri managed to defend herself before escaping to a neighbouring house for safety.
It was during her absence that Lungu allegedly remained inside with her two children, three-year-and-seven-month-old Samuel Phiri and nine-month-old Innocent Tembo.
A neighbour who responded to the commotion reportedly arrived to find Lungu allegedly in the act on the younger child before he fled the scene.
Police officers who reached the home shortly afterwards found both children lying lifeless on the floor.
The discovery has sent shockwaves through the Nyimba community, where residents assisted police in tracking down and apprehending the suspect.
