Chief Inspector Purity Kobia, who was serving at Karen Police Station at the time, told the court that she received a report from Tuju at about 6 pm on March 21, 2026, concerning a white Land Cruiser that he said had followed him.
Asked by the prosecution whether she had received any false information from Tuju, Kobia said she could not establish whether the information was true or false because she was not present when the alleged incident occurred.
“I could not know whether it was false or true. I made the report as it was reported,” she told the court.
Kobia said Tuju did not tell her that he had been abducted.
The officer also said she could not determine whether Tuju had lied about being followed.
“I can’t tell he lied to me. I don’t know whether he was lying or not,” she said.
The court heard that Kobia was not the investigating officer in the matter. She said the investigation was subsequently taken over by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), and she therefore could not say what the investigating officer was pursuing.
Kobia testified that her role was to record the report made to her and assign it for investigation.
Her testimony came amid questions over a charge alleging that false information had been given to the police.
Kobia said she had not authored the charge sheet, despite her name appearing as the complainant. She told the court that the charge alleged the giving of false information, but maintained that she personally had not been given any false information.
“There was no false information I was given. That one I would deny,” she told the judge.
The officer also testified about an incident in which she and other officers went to Tuju’s home in Karen.
She said they found an abandoned vehicle, which they later towed to Karen Police Station. She said she did not know what happened to the vehicle after she was transferred from the station.
According to her testimony, the officers initially encountered a watchman who told them there was nobody in the house. She later received a call from Tuju’s wife, who said she did not trust the people at the gate and would instead go to the police station with her advocate to record a statement.
During cross-examination, Kobia was shown an occurrence book entry identified in court as OB 17 of March 22, 2026. The entry referred to a “missing person and abandoned motor vehicle” and was later described as referring to a “missing person and stolen vehicle.”
Kobia said she did not make the entry and did not know who had recorded it.
She also confirmed that she was not the officer who recorded the OB entry relating to Tuju’s report. The report she personally received was identified during re-examination as OB 21 of March 21, 2026.
Kobia maintained that the report made directly to her concerned the alleged vehicle trailing Tuju and that she could not speak to its truthfulness because she had not investigated the matter.
Tuju was reported missing on March 21. His family filed a missing person’s report, stating they could not reach him as his phones were switched off.
The former minister would then appear, saying he went into hiding after an attempted abduction.
