A teacher from Makutano S.A. School in Kanduyi, Bungoma South, has died following complications that arose shortly after she gave birth, leaving her school community in deep grief.
Annastancia Mulongo Barasa delivered a baby girl in Bungoma, and the procedure was reported to have gone well.
When did Barasa die?
However, she subsequently developed severe bleeding that could not be controlled, and was transferred to Bungoma Referral Hospital, where she died on Sunday, October 4, 2026.
The news of Barasa’s passing spread quickly within the school and the wider community, triggering an outpouring of sorrow among those who knew her.
Her colleagues, students and parents of learners at the institution have been left to come to terms with a loss that was entirely unexpected, given that her delivery had initially appeared successful.
What’s the leading causes of maternal death in Kenya?
Postpartum haemorrhage, the kind of excessive bleeding Madam Barasa reportedly experienced, remains one of the leading causes of maternal death in Kenya and across sub-Saharan Africa, claiming the lives of women who often show no warning signs before the situation becomes critical.
The appeal called on friends, colleagues, parents and well-wishers to assist the family in giving Madam Barasa a dignified send-off, as befits a dedicated educator who served her community.
She leaves behind a newborn daughter, a child who will grow up without ever knowing her mother.
