For Yvonne Mutindi, the dream of becoming a pilot began long before she understood what it would take to enter the aviation industry.
At seven years old, she would sit beneath a tree, watching aeroplanes disappear into the sky and imagining what it would feel like to be aboard one.
Yvonne’s Childhood Promise
As the aircraft crossed the sky, Yvonne made herself a promise: one day, she would fly one.
Years later, that childhood ambition has taken a remarkable turn, with the Kenyan woman now learning to pilot aircraft as she works towards obtaining her Commercial Pilot Licence.
In a social media post, Yvonne reflected on how far she had come since the days when aviation was little more than a dream she entertained while watching planes overhead.
“I didn’t just fly in an aircraft. I learned to fly one myself,” she wrote, describing her progress towards her professional aviation ambitions.
Yvonne’s career beyond aviation
Yvonne’s journey has also seen her establish herself in the travel industry. She says she became a fully licensed travel manager and built Marony Travels, a woman-led travel company she continues to run.
The entrepreneur described her current life as one that the seven-year-old girl beneath the tree could only have imagined.
Her story highlights how a childhood fascination can develop into a lifelong pursuit, even as other professional opportunities emerge along the way.
While she has already established a career in travel management, Marony is continuing to pursue her aviation ambitions.
Yvonne encourages people to pursue dreams
Reflecting on her journey, Yvonne challenged people to think about the ambitions they had when they were younger and whether they had abandoned them along the way.
She encouraged those with unfulfilled dreams to take practical steps towards achieving them, whether through education, entrepreneurship or making a difficult decision.
“Stop waiting until you feel ready. Start while you’re still afraid,” she urged, adding that people should not be too quick to abandon dreams simply because they seem difficult or distant.
For her, the ambition to fly has grown from a childhood promise into a pursuit that now involves learning the skills needed to operate an aircraft.
