Raila Odinga Junior has given Kenyans a glimpse of his late father’s legendary red Hummer, now fully restored and wrapped in a striking tribute.

The vehicle features portraits of the former prime minister alongside the words, “Baba, the legacy continues. Jakom Raila Odinga.”

How did Raila Junior honour his father?

The video, shared on his TikTok page on Sunday, 11 October, shows the Hummer H2 decked out in its signature red finish and campaign-style wrap, with Raila’s name and image prominently displayed on the body panels.

It is a powerful visual tribute to a man whose presence in Kenyan politics was as unmistakable as the vehicle itself.

The red Hummer carved out its own place in Kenyan political history during Raila’s 2007 presidential campaign, when it became one of the most recognisable symbols of the Orange Democratic Movement wave sweeping the country.

Crowds christened it “Nyundo,” the Swahili word for hammer, a nod to both its imposing size and the force of the political movement it represented.

After years of sitting idle and falling into disrepair, Raila Junior took on the task of restoring the vehicle following his father’s death.

The restoration was more than a mechanical project; it was a statement of intent about preserving a legacy that had defined Kenyan opposition politics for decades.

Raila Junior had earlier announced plans to place the restored Hummer on permanent display at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Mausoleum in Bondo, Siaya County, where it would sit alongside other family historical artefacts as a tribute to multiple generations of Odinga leadership.

The timing of the latest video is deliberate. It arrives just days before October 15, 2026, which marks one full year since the passing of Raila, a figure who contested the Kenyan presidency multiple times and served as prime minister between 2008 and 2013 before later taking up the role of African Union Commission Chairperson.

For many Kenyans who grew up watching the red Hummer roll through campaign rallies, the restored vehicle is more than metal and paint. It is a moving piece of political memory, brought back to life by a son determined to keep his father’s story alive.
