Faith Mwagandi: Kilifi Native Makes History as First Woman to Command a Warship in East Africa

A young woman from Magarini, Kilifi County, who once dreamed of becoming an engineer has become one of Kenya’s most celebrated military trailblazers, rewriting history not once but twice.

Lieutenant Colonel Faith Mwagandi’s entry into the military was entirely unplanned. After completing her studies at Moi Girls High School in Eldoret, she enrolled at Kenyatta University to pursue engineering.

From Classroom to Command Deck

That path shifted in 2007 when a recruitment advertisement for Kenya Defence Forces cadets caught her eye, and she made a decision that would alter the course of her life.

Mwagandi joined the Kenya Military Academy in Lanet, embarking on a naval career that took her across the country and internationally, including to the Britannia Royal Naval College in the United Kingdom.

Over the years, she served aboard several Kenya Navy vessels, among them KNS Galana, KNS Shupavu and KNS Shujaa. She also held the role of navigating officer on the research vessel RV Mtafiti.

In 2019, she stepped into the history books when she assumed command of KNS Shujaa, an offshore patrol vessel, becoming the first woman to command a warship in Kenya and in East Africa.

She held that command until 2022, leading sailors and demonstrating through daily service that skill and discipline carry no gender.

Second Historic Milestone on Mashujaa Day

On October 20, 2024, during the Mashujaa Day national celebrations held in Kwale, Mwagandi achieved another landmark.

She commanded the national Guard of Honour, becoming the first female senior officer to lead such a formation at a national event in Kenya.

The Guard of Honour comprised personnel drawn from all three service branches: the Kenya Army, Kenya Air Force and Kenya Navy.

The timing gave the moment added weight. Mashujaa Day exists to honour those who have shaped the Kenyan story, and on that very occasion, a daughter of Kilifi was doing exactly that.

An Inspiration Beyond the Uniform

Mwagandi’s journey carries a message that reaches far beyond her military record. She began with one ambition, redirected when opportunity appeared, and rose through a field where women had rarely been seen in command.

Her career shows that a girl growing up in Magarini can train as a naval officer, sail aboard warships and eventually lead a national military formation.

For girls and young women across Kilifi County, her achievements stand as concrete proof that conventional limits on what women can pursue are worth questioning and ultimately discarding.

The Kenya Navy recognised her with multiple postings and international training opportunities, a career built on performance and perseverance in equal measure.

Lieutenant Colonel Faith Mwagandi: trailblazer, naval officer, warship commander and a proud daughter of Kilifi.
