A quiet village in Kisumu West became the scene of a deeply unsettling incident after the remains of a man known as Odwaro were dug up from his grave, less than two months following his burial.

The shocking development unfolded in Dago Sub-location, Kiboswa, and was directly linked to a long-standing land dispute that is currently being heard in court.

Details indicate that Odwaro’s body had spent several months at the mortuary before his family finally proceeded to bury him on the contested piece of land.

That decision, however, clashed with ongoing legal proceedings. A court order was subsequently issued directing that the burial should not have taken place on disputed land while the case remained active.

The order was read aloud to the crowd of villagers who had assembled to witness what many described as an extraordinary and distressing scene.

Officers from the Dago Police Station were present throughout the exercise to ensure the court’s directive was carried out.

The atmosphere was tense, with a section of the community expressing open hostility towards the process.

Despite the resistance, authorities proceeded with the exhumation, and the body was transported back to the mortuary.

For many onlookers, it was a moment that stirred deep emotions, raising difficult questions about the intersection of legal processes and cultural burial practices.

In many Luo communities, the resting place of the deceased carries profound spiritual and familial significance, making the disturbance of a grave an exceptionally serious matter in more ways than one.

The land dispute at the centre of the incident remains before the courts, and the burial site has now become yet another flashpoint in what appears to be a protracted and painful legal battle.
