A couple’s candid interview has set Kenyan social media alight after the wife revealed that her father returned the entire dowry to the newlyweds shortly after their ruracio.
Speaking to Parents Africa Magazine, the woman recounted how her father pulled her aside immediately after the ceremony and handed back every coin he had received.
Did woman’s father refund dowry?
His reasoning was simple but deeply touching — he felt the young couple needed the money far more than he did to get their new life off the ground.
“My dad gave us the dowry money. He called me to his room after the ruracio and said I was the one going to start life. He gave me the envelope with whatever he received. He said we needed the money more and asked us to open a joint account and put the money there,” the woman recalled.
The father did attach one condition to the gesture. He told his daughter that if her own children one day came to her with the same wish regarding their dowry, she should honour it without hesitation.
The couple’s bond with family clearly runs deep.
The wife also noted that their daughter’s first birthday party turned out to be a grander affair than the wedding itself, something that left her feeling slightly guilty towards her own parents.
“Our daughter’s first birthday was bigger than our wedding. I was even feeling bad for my parents,” she said.
The interview divided opinion sharply online. X influencer @MrJamesKe set the tone for much of the debate, writing that “some things should remain between the people who know.”
Several others echoed that sentiment, while a few pushed back:
@margie_nduta:
“That’s a normal practice for many wealthy parents.”
@imwende:
“It should remain between these two and the dad.”
@odongo_aus3430:
“It was at this moment he knew he messed up.”
