Just days before her detention by Nairobi police, former Kenyan TV host and actress Regina Re had shared a tender birthday message celebrating her mother’s 86th year — a post that has since resurfaced and caught widespread attention online.
Regina Re, whose full name is Regina Wambui Gitao, along with her brother, her niece and the niece’s boyfriend, were ordered to be held for 10 days by a Nairobi court.
The four are being kept at Gigiri Police Station as detectives investigate the suspected murder of her mother, Dorita Lasinder Macharia, whose body was discovered at the family’s Loresho residence on October 30. Dorita was found with a deep wound to the neck.
No charges have been preferred against any of the four at this stage, and the matter is scheduled to return to court on 12 November.
What has added a poignant layer to the unfolding story is a post Regina published on Sunday, 1 November, just one day after her mother’s body was found. In it, she mourned her mum while reflecting on the birthday they had just shared together.
“My dearest Mommy…We just celebrated your 86th birthday…Two days later God chose you to celebrate with Him… eternally in heaven,” she wrote.
She went on to express deep gratitude for the love Dorita had given the family throughout her long life.
“For all the care, support and love you poured into your family, in your own unique way…And for all the many years God gave you to us…I am deeply grateful and forever will sing. May God grant we who are still down here, peace and understanding; And may perpetual light shine eternally on your soul…”
Alongside the message, Regina shared a birthday poster that read:
“Happy 86th Birthday, Mom and Grandma, 28th October 2026,” adorned with the biblical verse from Numbers 6:24-26. The poster was signed off with love from Ian, Gina, Jimmy, Sithu and Thandie-Malaika.
Macharia had turned 86 just two days before her death, making the circumstances surrounding her passing all the more striking.
Regina was a familiar face on Kenyan television and has maintained a public profile over the years.
