The burial of Gusii entertainer and digital creator MC Ogwatoni drew an extraordinary crowd to St Paul’s Nyacheki Primary Grounds on Friday, November 6, with mourners filling the entire field from front to back in a show of love that few public figures in the region have ever inspired.
MC Ogwatoni, whose real name was Samuel Bwonda Miruka, passed away on October 19, after sustaining injuries in a motorcycle accident in Ogembo, Kisii county.
What happened at MC Ogwatoni’s burial?
He later succumbed to those injuries while receiving treatment at Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital.
The scenes at the burial grounds told their own story. Thousands of mourners filled the open field, many holding up phones to capture the moment.
A raised platform stood to one side, where speakers addressed the crowd near large speakers, with trees lining both ends of the ground and a communications tower rising in the distance.
Kisii Governor Simba Arati was among the senior leaders who showed up to pay their respects, alongside Senator Esther Okenyuri and MP Zaheer Jhanda, underscoring just how significant Ogwatoni’s presence was in the Gusii community.
Arati described the late entertainer as more than just a performer, saying his work carried genuine meaning for the people he served.
“MC Ogwatoni’s voice as a digital storyteller and community advocate touched many across the Gusii Nation. We stand with his family and loved ones in this difficult time. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” the governor said.
The mourning extended well beyond the burial grounds, with many Kenyans expressing their grief online after news of his passing spread widely.
Sharob Shaznay wrote:
“Even the president cannot pull such a crowd. He was really nice to everyone.”
Lizzy Lizzie paid her respects simply:
“Rest easy young man, till eternity.” Prince Calvo added: “He had many friends.”
The turnout at his burial was itself a testament to that.
Ogwatoni had built a loyal following through his work as a digital creator and entertainer, using his platform to reflect the culture and stories of the Gusii people.
His death at a relatively young age cut short a career that had clearly resonated deeply with audiences far beyond his immediate community.
