A 22-year-old Kisumu mother who had previously suffered the heartbreak of losing her first child walked out of hospital this month cradling three healthy babies.
Rael Awino Kaiga delivered successfully after doctors at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) guided her through one of the most medically complex pregnancies the facility manages.
Rael’s high risk pregnancy
According to the hospital, she was admitted to JOOTRH on September 14 at 31 weeks of pregnancy after her body began showing signs of early labour.
Her homecoming was particularly emotional because Rael had previously experienced the devastating loss of her first baby.
This time, however, she left the hospital with two boys and a girl in her arms after doctors successfully managed her pregnancy and provided specialized care to the premature newborns.
According to JOOTRH, Rael was admitted to its Maternity Ward on September 14 at 31 weeks of pregnancy after going into premature labour.
Carrying three babies presented additional medical risks, prompting the hospital’s medical team to closely monitor her condition and intervene to delay delivery.
How Kisumu doctors saved preemie triplets
The doctors initiated tocolysis, a treatment involving medication to suppress uterine contractions and slow down labour, giving the babies more time to develop inside the womb.
The intervention proved successful, allowing the pregnancy to continue for almost another month.
When Rael reached 34 weeks, the medical team performed a planned Caesarean section (CS), successfully delivering all three babies.
However, their medical journey was not over. Because they had been born prematurely, the newborns were transferred to the hospital’s Newborn Unit (NBU), where they received specialized care as doctors monitored their progress.
The three babies gradually improved, eventually reaching a point where they could be discharged from the unit.
Couple thanks doctors after losing first baby
Their successful discharge was followed by that of their mother from the Maternity Ward, bringing an end to nearly two months of hospital care.
For Rael, leaving the hospital with three healthy newborns was a deeply meaningful experience, particularly given her previous loss.
She expressed gratitude to God for the safe arrival of her children and thanked the healthcare professionals who supported her through the pregnancy, delivery and the babies’ subsequent hospital stay.
Her partner, Elijah Odhiambo Ombora, also praised the hospital staff for their dedication and commitment to caring for his family.
Couple appeals for support as they raise triplets
With all three babies now discharged, Rael and Elijah are preparing to begin a new chapter as parents of three newborns.
The couple appealed to well-wishers and members of the public to support them as they take on the responsibility of raising the children.
Raising triplets comes with considerable demands, including providing for three babies at the same time, from feeding and clothing to healthcare and other essential needs.
