A bus that was heading to Nairobi on the wee hours of the morning of Monday, December 18, 2023 caught fire along Mombasa Road.

Police say that the Public Service Vehicle (PSV) caught fire with a total of 27 passengers on board and it took place in Mogingo Area.

Eastern regional police commander Joseph Ole Napeiyan said that there were no injuries during the incident that took place at 3:35am.

Currently, the matter is being handled by officer attached to the Mtito Andei Police Station.

“The matter was reported by road users that there was a bus belonging to Buscar Bus Company which was on fire. Police went to the scene and found the bus which was heading to Nairobi burning. All the passengers were evacuated,” Mr Napeiyan said.

Nairobi News has established that the bus of registration number KCN 059A was being driven by Mr Daniel Menza Katana.

By the time of going to press the bus had not been removed from the scene and passengers were waiting for a different bus to pick them so as they can proceed to the city.

Meanwhile, four people have died following a grisly road accident that took place along the busy Nakuru- Eldoret Highway.

Police say that the accident took place at 5AM after a Nakuru bound matatu collided head-on with a 60 seater bus. The matatu belongs to Msamaria Shuttle Limited.

A report indicates that the matatu driver lost control of the vehicle which led to the accident. Those who died are three passengers who were in the matatu plus their driver.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has cautioned drivers to be careful while driving on the road especially during this festive season.

In 2023, NTSA in a report said that pedestrians recorded the highest number of fatalities in road accidents that occurred in October 2023.

Pedestrians accounted for 129 deaths out of the 330 recorded.

“In October 2023, there were 330 fatalities resulting from road traffic crashes compared to 361 in October 2022,” the authority said.
