Muslims for Human Rights (MUHURI) has elected former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga as the chairperson of its Board of Directors.Mutunga, who served as the country’s Chief Justice from 2011 to 2016 was elected unanimously. He takes over from Khelef Khalifa.
A statement by MUHURI noted that Mutunga’s grasp of matters of human rights and the law will help the body advance its goal of fighting impunity.
“He brings an immense wealth of experience, especially in the civil society and human rights sectors,” the statement reads in part.
MUHURI added that his track record of defending the law will help boost constitutionalism in Kenya.
Mutunga joined the Mombasa-based non-governmental organization as a board member in 2021.
